DICTATORS IN GERMANY AND ITALY
Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was the fascist prime minister of Italy, with dictatorial powers, from 1922 until he was overthrown in 1943.
Although the British wanted Italy on their side against Germany as it had been in World War I Mussolini was convinced that the war would end soon with Germany’s victory, and decided in May 1938, to fight alongside Adolf Hitler in any war against the democracies of the world. But his armies poorly led and didn’t prepare for war; they were defeated quickly by Allied forces
On the other hand Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was the dictatorial leader of the Nazi Party. Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and quickly transformed Germany into a totalitarian fascist state. His first alliance, though, was with Japan after breaking is alliance with China.
With Hitler’s imperialist and ethnical purity ideology the Second World War started in 1939, and he commanded Germany through it. He declared Britain as his main enemy and invaded Poland. He stated:
“Poland never will rise again in the form of the Versailles treaty. That is guaranteed not only by Germany, but also ... Russia.” - Adolf Hitler, public speech in Danzig at the end of September 1939
The Versailles treaty was an agreement signed at the end of World War 1, which ended the war between Germany and the Allies. This treaty was mainly against Germany, so for revenge Germany soon broke the “peace” and the World War 2 started.
Hitler retained power in Germany until his suicide just before Germany's surrender in 1945.
